This funding from the USDOT's Port Infrastructure Development Program is significant as it will support the North Gate Relocation and Access Optimization project, improving the port's operations and benefiting surrounding neighborhoods.
The project will include the construction of a 4,000-foot elevated roadway access to the general cargo terminal.
The North Gate security checkpoint will be relocated, and a new gate operating system will be installed.
At-grade railroad crossings will be improved, and new buildings will be constructed for badging, guardhouse, and cargo control.
A truck queuing area will be established, along with the installation of EV charging infrastructure and solar panels.
These enhancements will increase the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the port by expanding railroad capacity, reducing truck delays caused by railroad operations, and improving supply chain reliability for U.S. exporters.
The project will also strengthen the resilience of the strategic seaport through the implementation of new security technology and cyber prevention tools.
With the support of federal funding, the relocation and optimization of the Port of Wilmington's North Gate will bring about significant improvements in port operations, benefiting both the local community and U.S. exporters.
