Ways to Make Your Coliving Home More Sustainable

Ways to Make Your Coliving Home More Sustainable

Everyone should do their part to take care of the environment. Whether that means carrying around a metal straw or using reusable grocery bags at the grocery store, every action counts. Home renters and owners can do their part, too. Here are 7 ways to make your apartment more sustainable.

Reduce use of single-use plastics

Instead of using water jugs or bottled water, get a Brita filter to clean your tap water. You can also use reusable containers to store food to reduce the use of plastic bags and to go containers. This will reduce plastic waste from your household.

Make a Compost Bin

Create a compost bin in your home to make use of all those half-eaten fruits and old food. When the compost breaks down, it can then be used as fertilizer to grow plants in a garden.

Use Cold in the Washing Machine

Wash your clothes in cold water to preserve energy and water. This will also help your water bill.

Turn off Electronics

Reduce the electricity you use by not just turning out the lights, by powering down all electronics when you are not using them. A great way to do this in one fell swoop is by using a power strip and turning off the whole thing before you leave home.

Recycle!

One of the easiest ways to be sustainable is by recycling. Recycle your cans, plastics, glass, and anything else. Learn your apartment’s and city’s recycling policy. If they don’t accept everything, choose a day out of the week to bring your recycling to a recycling center by yourself.

Use LED Light Bulbs

Switch out your light bulbs to LEDs. They last longer and are energy efficient.

Get Glass Containers

When saving leftovers and packing lunches, use glass containers instead of plastic containers and baggies. Glass lasts longer and is better for the environment. Mason jars are a great way to store food.

These seven simple tips will help you be more sustainable in your coliving home. With these tips, you’ll be doing your part to save the environment.
